Direct funding for indigenous forest tenure: Norway outperforms other donors, new database shows

News May 29, 2024 / By: Ann Danaiya Usher

A 40-year-old programme run from the Norwegian Embassy in Brazil has managed to do what the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom have failed to do: provide direct grants to indigenous-run organisations. A new public database on funding for forest tenure rights reveals a huge discrepancy in donors’ provision of direct grants to indigenous organisations and national NGOs. During 2016-2022, Norway gave USD 50 million in direct funding, mainly to groups in Brazil, outspending the three other donors combined.
