Aviation industry can now tap into Guyanese forest carbon credits, rights groups cry foul

For the first time, tropical forest carbon credits are available for purchase by airline firms to use toward their UN-registered emission reduction targets. The credits were issued last week to Guyana by the Norwegian-funded ART forest carbon standard, ignoring calls from indigenous rights groups to postpone the decision and address shortcomings. ART’s certification process is “simply not credible,” says lawyer Nonette Royo, who leads the Stockholm-based Tenure Facility.
