Sweden: Hard-won gender and sexual reproductive health mandates could be wiped out by merging UNFPA and UN Women

News April 10, 2026 / By: Ann Danaiya Usher

As discussion about a proposed merger of the two UN entities drags on, Sweden has emerged as an outspoken critic of the process, calling for an evidence-based review that weighs risks and benefits rather than a fait accompli. “We should have a proper assessment before we take a decision,” Ambassador Andreas von Uexkull says to Development Today.

UN Deputy Secretary General Amina Mohammed leads the work to assess the benefits of merging UNFPA and UN Women as part of the UN80 reform. Sweden is among member states that have criticised the process, warning that hard-won mandates on gender equality and sexual and reproductive health and rights could be diluted and calling for Mohammed’s working group to consider non-merger options.  (Photo: UN / Loey Felipe)
