Running out of cash, UNRWA struggles to get through April

April 10, 2025 / By: Ann Danaiya Usher

While top UN officials warn that 2.1 million Gazans are being “trapped, bombed and starved again” in Israel’s aid blockade of Gaza, the lead agency for Palestinian refugees UNRWA is about to run out of cash this month. Ireland, Norway, the Netherlands, and Denmark have fast-tracked grants to the beleaguered agency, but Gulf states have not stepped up. The Swedish and US decisions to defund UNRWA mean that almost one-fourth of the core support has been wiped out.
