Scientific advisory council in limbo as Sida mulls over its future

News March 05, 2025 / By: Ann Danaiya Usher

While funding for Swedish development research has been levelled down, the government now intends to abolish an independent committee of scientists that advises Sida staff, in a move that academics see as the latest salvo in an attack on a knowledge-based approach to development. The Chair of Sida’s Board Gunilla Carlsson aims to reinstate the council in some form or another. “As Europeans, we trust in science and knowledge,” she says.
