Gavi commits USD 1.65 billion for COVID vaccines though demand is ‘close to zero’

News July 04, 2023 / By: Ann Danaiya Usher

The vaccine alliance Gavi will hold onto 60 per cent of the USD 2.7 billion that remain unspent in COVAX to purchase more COVID-19 vaccines, even though demand is low, and most deliveries are currently covered by donations. This leaves Gavi with USD 1 billion in unspent COVID funds. The agency is exploring three options for spending this remaining money.
