Nordics lose ground, dramatic drop in UN top jobs

News December 22, 2011

The number of top positions in the United Nations held by Nordic nationals has dropped by almost half in the past four years, a Development Today survey shows. The competition has become stiffer and the Nordics, among the most generous donors to the UN, are losing ground.

Waving the cheque book appears to be a strategy that has done more harm than good for donors like Norway and Denmark.

On the global scene new players like China, India, Brazil and South Africa play an increasingly important role in influencing the United Nations.
