Competitors fear Yara will gain fertiliser monopoly in Tanzania

Business April 22, 2010

Donors and private firms in Tanzania are demanding an explanation from the Norwegian fertiliser giant Yara about how it has obtained land in the harbour of Dar es Salaam from the government on favourable terms without a tender.

Other actors in the fertiliser market fear Yara will obtain a monopoly on fertiliser imports. Questions about the controversial Yara land deal have ended up at the Prime Minister’s Office.

“My hope is that the favourable land allocation is looked into by the government," says Petra Larsson, Spokesperson for Export Trading Group in Dar es Salaam to Development Today.
