Climate aid could secure first step in massive dam in the Amazon

The Amaila Falls hydropower project, which Guyana plans to build with Norwegian climate aid financing, is the first stage in a much larger scheme. The extended project would flood Amerindian lands and destroy large areas of rainforest, according to a report prepared for Survival International.

Guyana is hoping to obtain a loan from the Inter-American Development Bank to finance Amaila Falls. Head of Environmental Safeguards at IDB Janine Ferretti tells Development Today that an assessment of cumulative impacts is part of IDB’s due diligence process.
