Swedish Auditor General targets budget support to Mali

In an investigation of Swedish budget support to Mali, the Auditor General concludes that Sida has insufficient documentation to determine whether aid funds are being used in a proper way.

The Swedish government has set five conditions for the provision of budget support, but the auditor says Sida lacks clear rules about how to decide whether these conditions are being met.

Weaknesses identified in the report include Sida’s failure to inform the Swedish government about billions in reportedly missing funds from Mali’s state coffers, national audits years behind schedule and a lack of capacity in the Malian administration.
