Global food seed collections rely on begging bowl

Cary Fowler, Executive Director of the Global Crop Diversity Trust which manages the Svalbard Seed Vault, argues for an Endowment Fund that can guarantee preservation of gene banks in perpetuity.

On the one-year anniversary of the Svalbard facility, Fowler raises concern that the survival of the world’s seed collections rests precariously on annual hand-outs from donors.
